The Garden Bug

I've caught it and I'm afraid right now I don't see any hope for recovery. With temperatures in the 50s and 60s lately it's easy to forget that we're still in the middle of winter. I know it's too early to plant stuff outside (especially since we could still get a big freeze, it being only the beginning of February) but that's not stopping me from getting ready for spring. I enlisted Daniel's help just a couple of weeks ago to till our garden plot and since then I've been working on getting it ready to plant once it's safe.
I started working on garden plans back toward the beginning of January so they're all ready. Earlier this week I ordered seeds from our favorite seed company, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, which arrived today! I also pulled apart several tomato cages from years past, hooked them together end-on-end and staked them up along the end of our garden for a tomato trellis.
This is something new for me. We've always had our tomatoes in cages but I DO NOT like tomato cages. Period. I just don't! I don't like having to stick my hands through the cages, I don't like having to go out and set them back up after a big wind storm. Besides, they aren't very pretty, ya know. ;) So I'm going to try growing my tomatoes like a hedge this year.
Yesterday I started some of my seeds in pots inside and hopefully this weekend or the beginning of this coming week I'll be able to start more now that I have my other seeds. This year I'm planning on peppers, eggplant, lettuce, spinach, radishes (a new garden favorite), tomatoes, green beans, sunflowers, marigolds, dill, basil, parsley, rosemary, sage, lemon balm, yarrow, cilantro, oregano, lavender, and I think I'm going to bring out a flower garden mix that my friend Amy gave me. Oh yeah, and we'll have okra but not in the big garden. Nope, I'm moving them to a little plot under out guest room window. For the last couple of years I've put flowers this year but this year my brother Joshua suggested putting the okra there since the plants are big and beautiful and can be used in landscaping. :)
So, that's where I am right now. I can't wait for the weather to be sure so I can plant! :)
