Embarking

We all have dreams, whether they be secret dreams hidden and protected, or if everyone in our little world knows about them. It doesn't matter how big or little they are, they're still dreams. The question is, what will we do with them?

I have a dream. For years it's been pretty much the same. I sew all the time, it's my job. But it's also my hobby. My favorite pastime. I love to get in there and create things. To take a flat piece of material and make it into something beautiful and useful. I love clothes. Seeing all of the different styles and details in various garments, especially costumes. I've always dreamed of being a fashion designer, a costumer. But I never did much with my dream. I've done some things, mostly for myself, combining and altering patterns to get the look I wanted. But now, now I'm going further.

I looked into fashion design schools and found one that I like, and, if I ever do decide to go to school, I would probably go there, but at this point I can't afford it and I would have to quit my job (which I love) in order to move to another place even though it's just for a year. And then, I found a book. It was a simple-looking book, set unobtrusively in a stand at Joanns.

But it's a treasure! When I showed it to my boss who is a professional when it comes to pattern design and sewing she told me that if I do everything in that book I'll be a professional. I needed no higher praise than that. So starting with "The Pattern Making Primer" I'm working on coming up with my own course, to to speak, on fashion design. Right now I have three books: "The Pattern Making Primer" "200 Projects to get you into Fashion Design" and "The Fashion Designers Directory of Shape and Style."

Is it an exhaustive book list? Obviously not, but it's a start in the right direction. So over the next few months (or years) I'm going to be diving into the world of fashion design.  Do I know where I will end up? No. I'd love to be able to design clothes for young woman such as myself who want to dress in a way that is honoring to God, beautiful and fashionable. I'd love to be able to design gorgeous costumes. When I can do this I could turn it into a career, starting my own clothing line, or I could use it for personal use, for friends and family. I don't know. But who does know where they'll end up when they're just stepping into the water?

If you know of any good books/resources that you would recommend to anyone starting out on their own for in such an endeavor, please, don't hesitate to drop me with your suggestions. I'm open for any ideas that can help me along the way!!!
